Visualize- Reading

Hello Families,

Welcome to Learning with Joy! Thanks for being here and I hope we can find joy in learning together!

This month we are going to Visualize. We will be using visual tools to help learners see their thinking and learning. Stay tuned throughout the week for ways to support reading, writing, and more with graphic organizers and ways to make thinking and comprehension tangible. Be sure to get your FREE printables and let’s visualize & grow together.

Visualize- Reading Comprehension

Graphic organizers are a great way to increase learning potential and allow your learner to show and share their thinking. In my post about Getting Curious during reading time, I talked about the importance of building comprehension skills. We read to make meaning and making sure that learners can understand and discuss texts is important (whether they read or are read to). This week when discussing texts, have your learner draw or write about the story. You can talk about the setting and the characters or the important events and then have them draw and write these elements.

CLICK HERE for a free downloadable. There are 2 options to use. One is geared toward younger learners or pre-reading/writing and allows them free space to draw. The other is more detailed and has space for writing and drawing. You can discuss and guide or give to more independent learners to complete on their own after reading a story.

Have your learner present or share their work with another family member or friend to add an element of ownership. It’s great to hear their thoughts and thinking about a story and gives them an opportunity to share and be proud of their work.

Have Fun and enjoy seeing your learners thinking on the page!
